Vinegar Spray for Fleas in the House

Beneficial Nematodes​

Spraying your outdoor areas with beneficial nematodes is a safe, non-toxic method that is very effective.

A nematode called Steinerma carpocapsae is a parasite of fleas. It effectively kills adult fleas and their larvae and pupa in grass and soil.

If you have a sizable backyard, you can spray a beneficial nematode solution to keep your cat flea free during the summertime.

Beneficial nematodes are environmentally safe. Studies have indicated that they can eliminate more than 90% of flea larvae within 24 hours of the first application.

Beneficial Nematodes are roundworms that eat organic matter. They live in warm and moist soil and attack their host by boring a hole in its body.

When they attack the host, they emit bacteria that help predigest it for the nematodes.

This causes death within 48 hours. The nematodes will not harm your pets, family, or plants. Beneficial nematodes are best for outdoor use.

However, they can also be used on your carpets and rugs. If you use them in this way, make sure to vacuum the carpets first thoroughly.

Brewer's Yeast

Brewer's yeast is a natural flea repellent for cats. The ingredient that is effective is its thiamine. The taste and smell of the thiamine repel fleas.

For this reason, if your cat ingests brewer's yeast, then the fleas will be repelled from her. Thiamine is also a B vitamin, which makes it beneficial for your cat.

Brewer's Yeast is a substance that you can buy at any health food store or grocery store. It comes in liquid, powder, and flake form. For the purpose of controlling fleas, the powder form is the best.

You can mix it into your cat's food. You can also dust the coat of your cat or dissolve it into the water for application on her coat.

You should only use about one teaspoon of the yeast for sprinkling on your cat's food.

If you are using the yeast as a dietary supplement, it might take as much as a month to reach the maximum flea control power.

Make sure to wet all of her fur thoroughly. Be careful not to get the solution in her eyes. You should do this process once a week.

For Carpets and Furniture​

Make a solution of equal parts of lemon juice and water. Spray the fabric areas thoroughly. You might want to test the solution in an inconspicuous place first.

Lemon Juice for Laundry​

You also need to get rid of the fleas and their eggs on your cat's bedding and collar.

 Launder your cat's bedding and toys in the washing machine. Use the hottest setting and add a cup of lemon juice to the wash. Repeat this every day until the infestation has abated.

Eucalyptus

The eucalyptus tree is native to Australia and was brought to California in the 1850s. The minty scent of the eucalyptus leaves and their oils seem to repel fleas. This has not been proven scientifically, however.

To use this remedy, cut the stems and leaves from a eucalyptus plant and put them in open glass jars around your house. Make sure that your pets can't access them.

For out of doors, hang the leaves, stems, and pods in nylon hose from tree branches around your yard, outside of the reach of your pets.

 The ASPCA has stated that eucalyptus is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. The symptoms of the poisoning include diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, and salivation. If you think that your pet may have been poisoned, take her to the vet immediately.

Vacuum

There have been experiments done that show that vacuuming is an effective weapon in the fight against fleas.

Tests conducted at Ohio State University on the cat flea showed that vacuuming killed fleas in all stages of life.

Although vacuuming alone won't rid your house of fleas completely, it certainly does help. Vacuuming can also contribute to rid you of ticks that your cat may have brought indoors.

Before you vacuum, remove any small pieces of furniture and other items from the area so that you can cover the entire floor.

Eliminate or cover any nearby food or water bowls so that they are not affected.

When you vacuum your carpets, make sure not to miss any spots. After you vacuum, remove the bag and place it in an airtight garbage bag. Throw it away in an outside trash can to prevent reinfestation.

If the vacuum is bagless, empty the contents into a trash bag and put it in an outside trash can. Wash out the canister with hot, soapy water and allow it to dry before replacing it.​

Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier can kill fleas because it draws the moisture out of the air.

Fleas require a certain amount of humidity in the atmosphere to live. When the moisture is removed, they shrivel up and die.

The advantage of using a dehumidifier is that it is something that is entirely harmless to your pets and family.

You will need to vacuum up the dead fleas and any eggs that may be on your furniture or carpet. The combination of the dehumidifier and vacuuming can rid you of fleas permanently.

The only disadvantage of this method is that you might need to buy several machines to get the job done.

This is the case if you have a large home with many areas affected by the infestation. However, if you need the dehumidifiers anyways, then this won't be an issue.

You need to make sure that you have a dehumidifier that is at least 10 liters for every 4x4 room in your house.​

Salt

Salt acts as a dehydration agent and dries out the bodies of fleas. To use this method of killing the fleas, buy some highly refined household salt or sea salt.

Make sure that it is as finely ground as possible. It should have a powdery consistency.

Sprinkle it over your carpets. Brush it in. Leave this on the carpets for 12 to 48 hours. Then, vacuum it up thoroughly.

Salt can attract moisture. So, don't leave it on the carpets for very long in hot or humid conditions.

This could make your carpet absorb the moisture. For a severe infestation, the salt may be combined with boric acid.

The chemical is contained in some commercially available products, such as Borax.

You should use the same method as with the refined salt. You need to check with your carpet manufacturer to ensure that the carpet can take boric acid. Boric acid is not toxic.

However, long-term exposure to it may cause some health conditions in people and pets. Therefore, this method should not frequently be used.

Cedar Chips

Cedar chips are available for purchase in your local pet or home improvement store.

Fleas are repelled by the smell of cedar and will do almost anything to avoid it. You need to make sure that your cat is not allergic to cedar.

Place the cedar chips in the corners of rooms, in the cat bed, and under furniture.

Also, put them in a cotton cloth underneath your pillow. Maybe also in your bedding. This will ensure that your bed remains free of fleas. It will also make your bed smell fresh.

Aloe Vera

Aloe juice and cayenne pepper act as an excellent natural flea repellent for cats. Only take aloe juice and add one teaspoon of cayenne pepper.

Spray in the areas of the infestation. Aloe gel can also be applied on the fur of your cat and on your body to soothe and heal skin that has been affected by fleas.​

Cleaning Beddings and Carpets

The moment that you find fleas in bed makes sure to wash your sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and comforters with detergent on the hot cycle.

Then, put the bedding in the dryer. Fleas cannot live through the hot cycle in both the washer and dryer.

If the infestation is also on the mattress, then washing the bedding may not suffice.

Next, vacuum the sheets, mattress, and pillows. The rugs should also be vacuumed on a regular basis. Doing this will eliminate the eggs.

Natural Flea Collars

Chemical-infused flea and tick collars aren't safe for pets and their owners. The poisons they contain can irritate the skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tracts.

An herbal collar will not entirely protect your cat against fleas and ticks, but it definitely can help.

You can use one teaspoon of the vodka with either one drop of geranium essential oil or cedar wood essential oil. Don't use this kind of collar on a cat that is less than one year of age.​

Spices

While you won't find anything in your spice cabinet that is a natural flea killer for cats, there are a few things that will serve as a natural flea repellent for cats. Garlic powder is just such a repellent.

The smell of garlic is excreted through your cat's skin. Simply sprinkle an eighth of a teaspoon of garlic powder onto your cat's food. This will make the fleas jump off of your cat. Don't use more than a small amount, however. Large quantities may be toxic to your pet.

Oregano oil contains a chemical called carvacrol. This is a natural antiseptic that kills both fleas and germs.

Simply mix one teaspoon of the oil with three teaspoons of olive oil and apply the solution to your cat's ears, skin, and fur with a cotton ball. The mixture will repel the fleas.

Cumin works like garlic powder, and there is no danger of toxicity. Just mix in a little bit of the spice into your pet's food.​

Flea Traps

Flea traps are a great natural way to rid your house of fleas. However, they can be expensive. Here, I will show you how to make a cheaper model at home.

It may look simplistic, but it will give you great results. The only thing that you need to purchase is a couple of tea light candles. You will need one per trap.

Step 1: Fill a few bowls with water and add two tablespoons of dish soap into each one. You will need one bowl for each trap.

The best kind that you can use is one that is wide with low sides. This gives a greater chance of catching a leaping flea.

Step 2 : After you mix the soap into the water, place a single tea light candle into each one. Put it in places where you have the highest concentration of fleas.

Light the wick. Repeat this process for some other traps and put them in affected areas. This will probably only take you 60 seconds per trap.

Put the traps in place before you go to bed at night. With the lights out in your house, the fleas will be more attracted to the traps.

Remember that you should empty out the traps in the morning. You don't want your cat to drink from the water.

Flea traps are a natural flea killer for cats. They are a great way of killing fleas without having to do much. All that you need to do is set up the trap and let it work for you.

When you place your flea traps, you want to make sure that you do so in a location that will maximize a number of fleas that are caught.

The best places are anywhere that your pet spends a lot of time hanging around. If your cat has a bed, then you should place the trap in its location.

Your cat will spend most of its time in the bed. That means that the fleas will be around there all of the time.

Another good idea is to also place a trap in your room or another room where you spend a lot of time. This will reduce the number of fleas that are biting you. If your cat stays on the couch in the living room a lot, then that is an excellent location to set the trap.

Flea-Repellant Plants​

Catnip

Catnip is pet-friendly. It will repel fleas, and you can also crush it up and rub it into your cat's skin to help protect against fleas. The active substance in catnip, nepetalactone, repels fleas.

Chamomile​

Besides making a great tea, chamomile can repel ticks and fleas. It does this through its scent. It is also the case that the plant will improve the health of other surrounding plants.

Lavender​

Lavender smells good to humans, but bugs hate the scent. Another bonus is that the plant looks great.

Rosemary​

Rosemary repels ticks, fleas, and some other bugs as well. The scent of the plant is what does this.​

A Few Odds and Ends

Earl Grey Tea​

Earl Grey tea acts as a natural repellent against fleas. Spread some tea from a packet on your carpet. Vacuum it up after a few days. This will reduce the infestation of fleas.

Dawn Dish washing Liquid​

Dawn dishwashing liquid is also an effective way to repel fleas. You should add a few drops of the liquid in regular bath water of your pet.

This will kill the fleas and provide relief for your cat. You can even use it as shampoo for your cat. Just make sure that you rinse it out thoroughly to prevent any irritation of the skin.

Homemade Non-toxic Spray​

You may want to consult your vet before you use this spray.

Mix two tablespoons each of sunflower oil and peppermint oil with one-half teaspoon vinegar, one-quarter cup of lemon juice, three tablespoons of water, one teaspoon of clove oil, and a pinch of garlic powder in a spray bottle.

Shake the solution well and spray on the skin as well as the fur of the pet.

Kittens

Fleas on your kitten can cause severe health issues. Your kitten might die within a few days if she is severely infested with fleas. This is because the kitten might get severely dehydrated.

A kitten that is infested with fleas will start to become lethargic. When this happens, she will lose interest in eating and drinking and will not want to play.

Senior Cats

Apple Cider Vinegar​

Apple cider vinegar does not kill the fleas. However, it will make them jump off of your cat. Mix the apple cider vinegar and water in a proportion of 2:1.

Mix it well and pour it into a spray bottle. You can drench the coat of your cat with the solution and comb it gently. This remedy will work for about three to four days.

Flea Comb

Slowly drag the comb across the hair that is close to your cat's skin. Comb more in the areas where the fleas are likely to hide.

This will include the base of the tail, the armpits, and the groin area. Have a bowl of soapy water on hand. As you remove the fleas, drown them in the water.

Diatomaceous Earth

DE is a natural rock substance that is made from shelled algae. It is one of the best substances for use in getting rid of fleas. DE is harmless to pets as well as people. It causes fleas to dehydrate, making them die.

To use it, first put on gloves and dust your hands with the substance. Sprinkle it onto your cat's coat and rub it thoroughly. You can also use it on your cat's bedding. Use it once a day and once a week on your cat's bedding.​

Natural Flea Collar

You can make an excellent herbal natural flea collar for your cat. While it will not provide total protection from fleas, it certainly will help.

Removing Fleas Indoors​

The goal of this article has been to help you to understand how to get rid of fleas on cats and rid your home and yard of them.

The approach taken is to achieve this naturally, without the use of toxic substances.

To get rid of the fleas inside your home, you are going to have to turn everything upside down.

Once you have an infestation, the fleas will multiply rapidly and take over every region of your home.

You will need to make sure that you treat and clean all of the rugs and carpets in your home.

I have mentioned how you can use salt to remove the fleas from your carpets. I will review this process here again:

Salt​

4. Check places that your pets hang out. - Flea larvae will remain within 50 feet of your pet's preferred resting locations.

Clean around any cool, shady spots that your pet likes, such as spaces under decks and porches.

Also, beneath low-hanging shrubs and along fence lines. Remember to clean around dog runs or kennels.

5. Limit wildlife. - Urban wildlife attracts fleas and ticks. Squirrels, deer, rabbits, and mice are examples.

If an animal is warm-blooded, then it probably is carrying some insects. If animals are hanging around your yard, then consider ways to reduce its appeal.

Some animals look for trash. Skunks may come onto the property to look for grubs.
